DOSING CBD for Dogs & Pets
Need help with CBD dosage for dogs & pets?
CBD Dog Health tinctures are developed with a 1mL dose containing the average CBD dosage that will be effective for most pets. Based on research and our experience, this is a benchmark dosage that works for a majority of cases, however, despite common misconceptions, there is no accurate CBD dosage calculator. Dosing CBD for dogs, cats, and pets has little to do with size and weight, and sensitivity to CBD can range greatly and even change over time with age or chronic illness. This is why finding the right dosage of CBD for dogs, cats and pets is best determined by taking into account the unique needs and health status of each individual pet.
CBD Dosage FAQ
Can I give my dog CBD daily?
Absolutely! CBD can be administered situationally or as part of a daily routine, depending on your pet’s specific needs.
In most cases, the most effective approach when using full-spectrum hemp extract is consistent, daily administration of CBD for dogs, cats, and pets. This consistency is particularly crucial for pets with chronic conditions. While immediate results may be visible when starting a CBD regimen, there are long-term benefits that become apparent with sustained use.
For daily use, we recommend micro-dosing CBD oil for pets. Instead of administering one large daily dose, it’s advisable to split the optimal daily dose into 2-3 micro-doses throughout the day. Micro-dosing helps maintain a higher concentration of CBD in your pet’s bloodstream over an extended period. Micro-dosing CBD oil for dogs and pets, thereby maintaining a consistent CBD concentration in the bloodstream, is especially beneficial for managing issues like anxiety, discomfort, pain, and seizures.
According to research, the half-life of orally administered CBD in dogs is approximately 4-6 hours, with peak concentration occurring around 2 hours post-administration. By 6-8 hours, CBD levels typically return to baseline.
How do I know what CBD dosage to give my dog?
Contrary to popular belief, determining the appropriate CBD dosage for your dog isn’t primarily based on their size and weight. Instead, the most effective dosage takes into account the specific physiological condition of each animal. This encompasses factors such as their endocannabinoid system, age, metabolism, existing health conditions, ongoing ailments, and various individual health characteristics.
For example, one full dropper (9 mg) of our Calm tincture may be plenty to calm down one dog. But another dog of the same breed and size may need twice as much, or more.
During the first few weeks, we recommend a trial and error method as you monitor your animal’s response and determine optimal dose. The old saying “start low and go slow” is extremely applicable when considering full-spectrum hemp extract for pets.
Here are some of our recommended pet CBD dosages by ailment, visit our CBD dosage page to learn more.
CBD for Noise anxiety, travel, or situational anxiety – Start with 9 mg before the triggering event. Wait 15-20 minutes and if your pet is still anxious, administer another 9 mg until you see results.
CBD for General Anxiety – Start with a daily dose of at least 9 mg. If you don’t notice a difference within one to two weeks, increase the dosage to 15 – 25 mg daily.
CBD for Arthritis – Start with 9 – 12 mg daily. If you don’t notice a difference in one to two weeks, increase by another 9 – 12 mg daily until you see results.
CBD for Allergies – Start with 9 – 12 mg daily. If you don’t notice a difference within one to two weeks, increase by another 9 – 12 mg daily. Note: most often, allergies are caused by diet, and the diet should be altered to fully resolve the issue.
CBD for Aches and Pains – Start with 9 – 18 mg situationally or daily. If your dog is still in pain after 10 – 15 minutes, administer another 9 – 18 mg.
CBD for Cancer – For best results, administer 50 – 100 mg daily. However, to get started we suggest starting with 35 – 50 mg daily and increase if needed.
CBD for Seizures – Start with 35 – 50 mg daily and/or during seizure activity to stop seizures from occurring. Please consult your veterinarian if your pet is on phenobarbital before weaning.
CBD for Autoimmune Diseases – Start with 35 – 50 mg daily and increase if needed.
Can too much CBD oil hurt dogs?
Your pet cannot overdose on full spectrum hemp extract (CBD) oil. There have been numerous studies on the safety of CBD and full-spectrum hemp extract which confirm its safety for use in animals. In our experience, the most common side effect from giving too much is that a pet may get diarrhea or may become temporarily lethargic.
Every pet is different and some pets require more CBD than others. Check out our dosing guidelines to learn more about the proper starting point by ailment.
Does CBD work immediately for dogs?
The response to CBD oil can vary for each pet and their specific ailment.
For situations involving anxiety or pain, you should typically observe a change within 15-30 minutes. If you don’t notice a change within this time frame, you can administer another dose. It’s important to remember that your pet cannot overdose on CBD, and since every animal is unique, it may require some adjustment to find the ideal CBD oil dosage for your particular dog or cat.
In most instances, achieving the best results with a full-spectrum hemp extract involves consistent administration of CBD for dogs, cats, and other pets. This is especially crucial for pets with chronic conditions. Much of the CBD’s effects occur beneath the surface and may not be immediately noticeable. While you might observe immediate improvements after starting a CBD regimen, there are also long-term benefits that become apparent with ongoing use of CBD for pets.

Meet Your Founder
It’s no secret that I love animals. To see me on my rescue farm, Fire Flake Farm, is to see me in my element. Looking in on my furry and feathered and very joyful family of dogs, chickens, geese, and pigs, you would never suspect that my pets and I were once full of aches, pains, and anxiety.
When I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, one of my biggest fears was being in too much pain to keep going on adventures with my dogs. Determined to find an alternative to toxic pharmaceuticals, I discovered medical cannabis, and that’s when everything changed⎯⎯for me and my animals.
I’ve been practicing cannabis medicine since 2015, and by 2016, I became one of the first graduates of the Medical Cannabis program at University of Vermont. I spent the next two years searching for ethical, safe hemp farmers in Colorado and finding trusted partners who helped me launch CBD Dog Health in 2018.
Since then I’ve continued my mission to educate pet parents and veterinarians on the benefits of cannabis as medicine. Today, I am so proud to share that I am pain free, along with all the animals on my rescue farm, and all without any toxic medications, thanks to this miraculous plant. Cannabis medicine has changed my life and my pets lives- ask me how it can change yours.

CBD Dog Health FAQ
Do you test your CBD products?
Yes! CBD Dog Health products are rigorously tested by third party labs to ensure potency, consistency and purity from contaminants.
Not only that, but we make sure our Certificates of Analysis, (COAs), are easy to find, with a convenient QR code on each CBD tincture, CBD salve, and bag of CBD treats, that will lead you to that CBD product’s COA test results.
To learn more about CBD product COAs and how to understand the results, visit our COA blog.
What ingredients are used in CBD Dog Health's CBD pet products?
CBD Dog Health’s pet CBD products are expertly formulated by our founder Angela Ardolino, medical cannabis expert, with guidance from chemists and veterinarians. We take pride in using American-grown hemp, cultivated organically, free from pesticides, in contrast to other pet CBD companies using industrialized hemp oil from overseas sources.
Our products feature full-spectrum CBD-rich hemp extracts, setting them apart from lesser CBD pet products using isolates, distillates, or those labeled as “pure CBD” or “No THC.” Full-spectrum signifies that no cannabinoids are removed during extraction or production. Our CBD oils contain a range of beneficial cannabis compounds, including a minimal amount of THC (0.3% or less).
Furthermore, the essential oils incorporated into CBD Dog Health products are pure and organically sourced within the U.S. Our CBD-rich offerings are sourced from sustainably grown, high-resin cannabis that adheres to certified regenerative organic standards.
What is the proper way to store CBD dog health products?
The best location for storing CBD oil is a cool, dark environment. As long as it remains shielded from water, open air, and direct sunlight, your pet CBD oil will maintain its quality and remain suitable for an extended period.
Our CBD products do not have an expiration date, per se. The date etched on the bottom glass of your bottles/jars is the date that it was manufactured. We recommend using our CBD products within 18 months from the manufactured date, based on the shortest ingredient’s shelf life.
It’s also worth mentioning that hemp extract is naturally antimicrobial and anti-bacterial, further extending the shelf life beyond those parameters. If you are storing the product in a cool, dark place (like a kitchen cabinet), there is no reason they would not last well beyond the 18-month mark.

Is CBD for Dogs, Cats and Horses Safe?
Absolutely! But we still want to tell you why!
You might have heard the terms CBD for dogs, Full Spectrum Hemp Extract, CBD extract, hemp for dogs, or cannabis oil used interchangeably. For the most part, these all refer to one thing: cannabidiol, also known as CBD, extracted from a Hemp plant.
Our company uses Full Spectrum Hemp Extract in all of our CBD for dogs, cats and horses, including our tinctures and topical salves. Studies are continually being conducted on the many uses of full-spectrum hemp extract CBD for dogs, cats and other animals. CBD for dogs and pets has been shown to not only be extremely safe, but also very effective on animals. One thing is clear: CBD for dogs, cats and horses is a natural, safe way to manage a variety of ailments.
CBD is completely non-psychoactive, meaning that CBD for dogs and pets will not make your pet “high”. Clinical tests from Colorado State University have also shown that CBD for pets is both safe and non-addictive, it’s also impossible to overdose on CBD. There have also been studies on using CBD for dogs which shows that CBD for dogs and pets can be effective without the harmful side effects that come with prescribed pharmaceuticals.
What do veterinarians think about CBD for pets? In recent surveys, many vets vouch that they have seen CBD for pets used successfully, with no observable side effects. Recently, Nevada has become the first state in the U.S. to protect and authorize veterinarians to recommend and administer CBD for dogs and pets under a new law that takes effect October 1st, 2021.
CBD for Pets FAQ
What is CBD?
You may have encountered various terms like CBD for dogs, pet hemp extract, CBD extract for pets, or cannabis oil, often used interchangeably. In essence, they all point to a single substance: Cannabidiol (CBD).
CBD is the primary naturally-occurring cannabinoid compound of the hemp plant, accounting for as much as 40% of the plant’s composition. At CBD Dog Health, our pet CBD products are crafted using Full Spectrum Hemp Extract, which is derived from hemp plant flowers and encompasses a complete array of naturally occurring cannabinoids.
What is a Full Spectrum Hemp Extract?
Full spectrum hemp extract is a concentrated form of all the naturally occurring elements found in the hemp plant, encompassing cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and more. At CBD Dog Health, we trust the science that demonstrates full spectrum hemp extract as the most potent therapeutic CBD supplement available for pets.
With few exceptions, nearly all recent clinical studies investigating the therapeutic potential of CBD for dogs utilize full spectrum hemp extract. This extraction method preserves the delicate balance of the hemp plant’s interconnected beneficial compounds. This inherent synergy not only enhances the product’s effectiveness but also reduces the likelihood of side effects. Given its indisputable efficacy and safety, this formulation is the preferred choice for utilizing CBD in pets to achieve therapeutic advantages.
Clinical tests from Colorado State University show that full spectrum hemp extract (CBD) is safe, non-addictive, and impossible on which to overdose. There have also been studies conducted on using CBD for dogs which found that CBD can be effective without harmful side effects.
Is CBD legal?
The short answer? Yes. That is because hemp is legal in all 50 states.
Hemp is different from marijuana because it has a lower amount of THC (the psychoactive compound associated with feeling “high”). While both hemp and marijuana are part of the cannabis plant family, hemp has less than 0.3% THC, but has larger quantities of other effective compounds (called cannabinoids), like CBD.
The Farm Bill eliminated the classification of all hemp-derived items, including CBD, from the Controlled Substances Act, a legislation that prohibits drug possession. Essentially, this signifies that CBD is lawful when sourced from hemp, but not when sourced from cannabis (marijuana), even though it is identical at the molecular level.
Our CBD-rich full spectrum hemp extract for pets comes from carefully cultivated high-CBD hemp plants, which is why we are able to legally grow, manufacture, and sell our CBD pet products. Our CBD products for dogs and pets contain only trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%).
How does CBD work in dogs and pets?
CBD interacts with your pet’s endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate various physiological functions like mood, pain perception, and immunity. It promotes balance and overall wellness.
The endocannabinoid system has existed in almost every living organism from humans to animals and even some insects for millions of years. This universal system’s overall function is to regulate homeostasis within the body.
Cannabinoids are molecules present in both the body and various plants in nature, and they interact with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The body naturally produces ‘endocannabinoids,’ which bind to cannabinoid receptors, essentially ‘activating’ the systems within your dog’s body. Similarly, exogenous cannabinoids originating from plants like the cannabis plant closely resemble the body’s native cannabinoids. In essence, nature has crafted compounds that mimic the chemicals already present in the body!
Fundamentally, endocannabinoids and the ECS system play a crucial role in maintaining balance (homeostasis) within your pet’s body and its various systems. If there’s an issue or an imbalance in your pet’s body, the compounds found in full spectrum hemp extract help initiate the appropriate response, allowing the body to naturally heal itself.
Will CBD get my dog high?
No, your pet will not experience a high sensation from CBD Dog Health’s products. Our CBD for pets is derived from the hemp plant, which contains less than 0.3% THC. THC is the psychoactive component of the cannabis plant that is commonly linked to the feeling of being “high.”
The cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), found in our CBD products for dogs, cats and other animals do not induce psychoactive effects or a sense of being “high.” In some cases, at high doses, some dogs may initially exhibit increased energy, often referred to as ‘the zoomies,’ but this typically subsides with regular use.
THC levels within the hemp plant are extremely low, rendering it impossible to utilize any part of the plant as a psychoactive substance. CBD is the predominant compound in the hemp plant, and THC is almost non-existent. Using CBD hemp products for pets does not result in any sensation of being “high.”
How can my pet benefit from CBD?
CBD is increasingly gaining recognition for its many health benefits, and recent research is revealing how it can help animals too. Studies are showing how CBD and the other cannabinoids in a Full Spectrum Hemp Extract may be able to help your pet, from relieving pain to reducing seizure frequency.
If your pet suffers from arthritis, chronic pain, anxiety, allergies, skin conditions, cancer, tumors, autoimmune disorders or seizures, CBD for pets may be the right choice.

What is the difference between CBD products for dogs?
When selecting CBD products for pets, it’s crucial to consider your pet’s specific needs.
For more severe issues like canine cancer or epilepsy, a pet CBD tincture is typically more effective in providing significant results compared to pet CBD treats and chews or topical CBD salves for pets.
On the other hand, if your pet is dealing with milder problems such as allergies, or gastrointestinal issues, or situational anxieties like thunderstorms, CBD pet treats can be quite beneficial. Additionally, if your pet is uncooperative with CBD tincture administration, CBD treats are a convenient option.
For topical concerns like hot spots, wound healing, or skin allergies, a topical CBD salve is the best choice. Additionally, combining a pet CBD salve with CBD treats and/or a CBD tincture for pets can offer comprehensive relief for your pet, both internally and externally.
Is CBD good for senior dogs?
Yes! There are many ways that our senior pets can benefit from adding a Full Spectrum Hemp Extract CBD Oil to their daily regimen.
Just like us, our pets develop arthritis and joint pain with age. Full-spectrum CBD has been shown to increase mobility and help manage pain, while ensuring quality of life and improved general well-being.
Full Spectrum Hemp Extract CBD Oil has shown the ability to maintain normal cell function and promote healthy aging via mitochondrial support. In addition, CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects, in particular, can be most beneficial to the brain and to aging.
Although all dogs can benefit significantly from CBD, senior dogs often have the most visible improvements as they are often the ones with the most prevalent health problems.

Can CBD for dogs calm them down?
Yes, CBD for dogs and pets can be especially beneficial for managing anxiety and stress.
CBD works by interacting with your pet’s Endocannabinoid System, which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body. Within the brain, CBD can mimic serotonin by binding and activating your body’s 5-HT1A serotonin receptors. Often called the ‘happy’ chemical, these serotonin receptors are responsible for emotional balance.
Additionally, A 2013 article published in Neuropharmacology also found that CBD can help in facilitating extinction of negative emotion surrounding triggers, and helps manage PTSD and anxiety or panic disorders in people and animals.
Even more interesting: A 2019 study published in the Permanente Journal found that CBD also has a calming effect on the central nervous system and is better tolerated than other psychiatric medications.
Our CALM: CBD Oil for dogs, cats and horses is great for reducing stress from noise anxiety (like fear of thunderstorms or fireworks), anxiety around strangers, and the general stress that comes with the holidays.
